Album Review: Tigercity – ‘Ancient Lover’ (Tigercity)
Everything uncool is cool again, and one of those things is ’70s- and ’80s-style pop. No, I don’t mean new wave, which has had a particularly relentless revival in the past decade. I’m talking about Hall & Oates and Michael Jackson, artists whose music combines (and sometimes neuters) slick pop, funk, and R&B. Tigercity’s debut album is chock full of these influences — but, thankfully, the band has a sense of humor about it. The album kicks off with hilarious single “Fake Gold,” a drum-heavy confection, complete with ample falsetto, that warns, “Baby, I just want you to know / That I’m wearing fake gold.” Tigercity also names a bouncy track “James Iha,” for the Smashing Pumpkins guitarist. Perhaps lampooning Great Pumpkin Billy Corgan’s rotating cast of musicians, the band coos, “Baby, you won’t have to change / Another one will take your place.” (In case you hadn’t noticed, these guys are big on “baby.”) Most of Tigercity’s songs are similarly goofy, combining good-natured parody with genuine tribute. They may be first and foremost a novelty, but at least they’re fun.
