Alan Moore to Pen Next Gorillaz Opera

Though comic legend Alan Moore (The Watchmen, From Hell) tends to shy away from pop culture (or, at least, publicly despises any and all Hollywood involvement regarding his work), the author has certainly made no bones about his love of music. His latest endeavor will be a libretto for the new Gorillaz opera, a proper follow up to the band’s first opus, Monkey: Journey to the West.
In true reclusive fashion, Moore has said very little of the collaboration. “They [Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett] came down to Northampton last week because we’re planning for me to do the libretto on their next opera ,” he told Mustard Magazine in a recent interview. Though that’s all Moore had to say of the pairing, it’s enough to get both music and comic nerds salivating about the possibilities. With Moore’s eclectic mind and Hewlett/Albarn’s creative vision, I’m not even sure my brain could fathom what this collaboration could yield.
Meanwhile, Moore is continuing work on his bi-monthly fanzine, entitled Dodgem Logic. The project aims to capture “the spirit of the 1960s underground papers,” utilizing comics, essays, and even recipes to paint a particular portrait. Aside from the new opera, Hewlett and Albarn are also linked to the zine, and will contribute pages to the third installment. Can we say new BFFs?
