Album Review: Various Artists – ‘45:33 Remixes’ (DFA)
An impressive stable of international DJs and producers check in here with house, lounge, acid jazz, and other digital reimaginations of LCD Soundsystem’s 2006 track, “45:33.” London house duo Padded Cell (not to be confused with the Dutch hardcore outfit of the same name) punch up the strings, guitars, and synths and add a head-bobbing bassline to give the track an infectious ultra-lounge swing. Norwegian producer Prins Thomas gives it a blippy, minimalist twist, while letting the song’s horn-led funk work its magic. Parisian Pilooski runs things through a vocoder to add a robotic disco touch that makes his remix one of the compilation’s standout cuts. One of the EP’s most unique takes comes from Detroit’s Theo Parrish, who strips things apart and turns it into a trippy, jazz fusion piece. The New York-based LCD Soundsystem turn to their Big Apple peers as well, as Runaway and Prince Language also offer their interpretations.
