Steven Tyler, Apparently Still Aerosmith’s Frontman, Jumps Onstage with Joe Perry

Well, the saga of Aerosmith just gets better by the day. In fact, it’s quickly surpassing Gossip Girl as my favorite prime-time soap opera. It was only two days ago that Joe Perry was giving interviews saying Steven Tyler had left the band and they would be looking for a new frontman. Many publications had already begun speculating about who the replacement should be. But all that, it seems, is over now.

Last night, the Joe Perry Project performed at New York’s Irving Plaza. And, lo and behold, who should join the band onstage but… Steven Tyler! And he had an announcement to make: “New York,” he said, “I want you to know I am not leaving Aerosmith. Joe Perry, you are a man of many colors, but I, motherfucker, am the rainbow!” Then, he and Perry performed “Walk This Way.” The sound is a little crunchy on the video (in two parts) below, but it sure appears that Tyler, who was injured onstage back in August, is good as new. Halfway through the song, he unbuttoned his flannel shirt — and that is when you know Steve Tyler means business. Before he left the stage, he promised fans, “I’ll see you real soon!”

The question is, what do we think happened here? My first thought was that the whole thing, from start to finish, was a publicity stunt. But then, does Aerosmith really need to resort to desperate measures to get the rock press to write about them? Nope, not really. So, here’s my best guess: As Perry has described in interviews for months, tensions have been running high between Tyler and his bandmates. Perhaps he really has been incommunicado. And maybe Perry saw the announcement as a way to shock Tyler into recommitting himself to the band. If that was him aim, it certainly seems to have been successful. Of course, this is all speculation. While we’re floating theories, anybody else out there have a guess?

I know they have a lot of fans, but isn’t it about time AEROSMITH calls it a day? I mean, how many more years can they keep rehashing the same old songs? If I hear “Dream On” one more time….

There is way too much money to be made touring and reintoducing the old stuff to a third generation of downloaders is way too tempting. My guess is Tyler’s ego is as big if not bigger than Mick’s. I didn’t hear that Mick hung up his spandex yet, did you?

I disagree with jamie, Aerosmith is one of my all time favorites. They still ROCK. I remember when they used to party and just blow it on stage, but they ‘grew up’ and their music lives on!! I was worried that Steve Tyler was going back to his ol ways and I hope thats not the case, so it was great to see him get on stage and perform! So Dream On…..

I agree with Marianne, Aerosmith is my all time favorite band. The five of them together will ALWAYS ROCK. Most of those new bands have songs today that keep only one simple rythme going over and over again in all their songs. Steven writes amazing music and still performs it the best. It was amazing to see him get back on stage!!!!
