U2 Fined for Hometown Noise Violations

U2 can’t seem to catch a break these days.  It’s bad enough the band caught flak for ironically erecting a wall around their performance during the 20th anniversary of the Berlin Wall coming down.  To add insult to injury, the band have just been fined €36k (roughly $53,577) for noise violations in July.

Furthermore, these violations took place in Croke Park, nestled deep within the band’s hometown of Dublin, Ireland. Dublin City Council has fined both the band and music promoter MCD for the alleged violations, which occurred several times over the course of three hometown gigs. According to the council, the noise violations are the only breaches of contract, as the band and promotional company complied with all other conditions.

This is hardly the first time the Dublin City Council has cracked down on noise violations. Bruce Springsteen, Boyzone, and even Linkin Park have been slapped with fines in recent years. Meanwhile, these particular U2 gigs attracted controversy before they even began. Local residents complained about the large nature of these gigs off the bat, between the sheer size of the band’s spidery stage setup and the 44 hours of public work time it took to dismantle.  Some homecoming, huh?
