Video: Lady Gaga – “Speechless” (New Song, Live at Los Angeles’ MOCA)
When it comes to Lady Gaga, I am thoroughly ambivalent. I love her campy sensibilities and outspoken passion for gay rights. I think she’s a smart lady. And if we have to have pop stars, I think she’s better than most. But as for the music? I’ve always thought it was OK, but not great.
Still, she does some interesting stuff. Just this Saturday, she took the stage at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Arts’ 30th anniversary gala. As MTV reports, she premiered a brand-new song, “Speechless,” from her upcoming album The Fame Monster. And she sure did in style — flanked by dancers from the Bolshoi Ballet and on a piano decorated by that shiniest of all art stars, Damien Hirst. The ballerinas wore costumes designed by the unbelievable triumvirate of Frank Gehry (who also designed Gaga’s epic, Aretha-at-the-inauguration-rivaling hat), Miuccia Prada and Baz Luhrmann. The show also incorporated performance art by Francesco Vezzoli.
The song itself was a torchy, backwards-looking piano ballad. And while I certainly enjoyed the pageantry, the track doesn’t change the feelings I already have about Gaga’s music: It was fine, but still nothing to write home about. Watch for yourself, below, and see if you agree.
