Review: Groove Armada – “I Won’t Kneel” (Om)

Groove Armada I Won't KneelEnglish duo Groove Armada (Andy Cato and Tom Findlay) have been waxing stellar songs with dance floor grooves since the mid-’90s. At the core of their funky pastiche, which has birthed mega-hits “I See You Baby,” “Superstylin’,” and “At the River,” is an unprecedented musical ability (both producers play several instruments) that has set them aside from the pack. Arriving after their seventh album, 2007’s Sound Boy Rock, comes the first single from their upcoming Black Light. “I Won’t Kneel” finds the Armada moving away from its big beat and downtempo past with aplomb. Fronted by London-based chanteuse Saint Saviour, the song takes direction from the ’80s (think Bonnie Tyler meets Stevie Nicks’ solo work) without an inkling of irony. Saviour’s glistening voice soars and is the perfect match for Cato and Findlay’s shimmering keyboard lines and icy beats. Factor in choice remixes from Bloody Beetroots, Mock & Toof, Joe & Will Ask, and No Brainer & Mouj, and you’ve got a squeaker for best dance single of 2009.
