Travis McCoy Readies Solo Album, Wants Some R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Even though Gym Class Heroes’ front man Travis McCoy stands at a towering 6’5” tall, he can’t help but to feel as if no one notices him. As an MC at least. In an effort to change all that, the tattoo-clad McCoy is gearing up to release his first solo project without the rest of the Heroes. According to Billboard, the album, called The Lazarus Project, is set to be released sometime in the near future on T-Pain’s Nappy Boy Entertainment imprint and McCoy says that the record will make you respect him as an MC…and a singer too.
“I tried to keep the guest appearances at a bare minimum because this is my first effort away from Gym Class Heroes, so I didn’t want it to be super appearance-driven,” McCoy said in an interview. “It’s me showing another side of Travis. There’s a lot more singing and a lot more melody, but I think the guests that are on the record are there for a reason and are meant to be on the record. I feel like a lot of people in the hip-hop world don’t take me seriously as a rapper. And I feel that first-and-foremost I came up as a rapper before I started singing. All a lot of people know from me is ‘Cupid’s Chokehold,’ and they don’t scratch the surface and see beyond that dude who sings the song about his girlfriend. With this record, I feel like people are going to take me more seriously as a rapper and hopefully, as a singer as well.”
Could this spell the end for our Heroes? Not even. According to DigiWaxx, the teeth-brushing, rhyme spitting, note-holding McCoy says that even though he’s doing his own thing, Gym Class will always be the number one priority.
“Gym Class Heroes is, was, and always will be the priority. Anybody who has followed Gym Class Heroes knows that I’ve had seven or eight projects on the side of Gym Class Heroes since the beginning. I always have to be creative or I get depressed and sad. So this is just another project. I just happened to be joining up with Pain and Nappy Boy to get it out there to people.”
I guess you can cut Gym Class sometimes and still get an A.
