Save WFMU!

wfmuNew Yorkers, the few interesting people who happen to live in Jersey and online listeners around the world all understand what is so rare and special about WFMU, at a moment when just about every other radio station is owned by Clear Channel. But, like so many invaluable institutions, economic suckage is taxing its resources. As Merge writes, the station wasn’t able to raise adequate funds during its spring donation drive, falling short by a crushing $100k. Meanwhile, it also lost the lease on its transmitter. Now, the 100% listener-supported station has gone into emergency mode and is running a 24-hour fundraiser. The drive began at 7pm yesterday, but if you see this post before 7 tonight, you’ve still got time to donate. You can do that online or by calling 800-989-9368.

Says the station: “This is only the third time in WFMU’s 51 years on the air that we’ve taken the drastic measure of interrupting our programming, even briefly, outside of our annual March Marathon… WFMU has been in financial hot water before, and the support of our listeners has always bailed us out.” Here’s hoping the masses come through for you again, WFMU. Fans of good music everywhere are pulling for you.
