David Lynch to Make Beatles Guru Film

Who would’ve thought that the first David Lynch film since 2006’s nightmarish Inland Empire would be a film about Beatles guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi?

Well, given Lynch’s curious film career and more recent interest in Transcendental Meditation, it doesn’t seem too crazy of a proposition.  The director will be traveling to India in December to begin production on what may very well be a documentary on the late meditation guru, who passed away of natural causes in 2008.  The Maharishi became prominent in western culture in the late 1960s, soon after The Beatles paid a famous visit to India.  The band made reference of the experience in several songs following, including “Sexy Sadie” and an early demo version of John Lennon’s own “Jealous Guy.”  The band had already begun exploring eastern musical techniques in their mid-period work, culminating in their visit.

“It won’t be a so-called David Lynch film, really; it will be about Maharishi and the knowledge he brought out,” Lynch told Nymag.com. However, fans of Lynch’s dream-like style may still find something to love about the project, as he also added that the film will ”hold a lot of abstractions.” Either way, sign me up!
