Album Review: Vienna Boys’ Choir – ‘The Little Drummer Boy’ (Cobra)

Vienna Boys' Choir - The Little Drummer BoyThe Vienna Boys’ Choir? Hey, wait a minute, they’ve been around forever — shouldn’t they be the Vienna Old Men’s Choir by now? Oh, wait, they’re like the Austrian Menudo, with fresh blood pumped into the mix as they go along — now it all makes sense. With those voices, if they were adults they’d have to be the Vienna Castrati Choir. Yes, those lads with the titanic tonsils are back, bringing their heavenly harmonies to a batch of classic Christmas carols. Even though this is the 21st century version of the legendary choir, the vocal and orchestral arrangements are strictly old-school, fitting with both the choir’s longstanding tradition and the timeless nature of the material. The multilingual aspect of The Little Drummer Boy adds an interesting flavor too; while the title track and a few others (”Deck the Halls,” “The First Noel”) are in English, there are also songs delivered in the original Latin (”Adeste Fidelis”) and in the choir’s native tongue (”Es Hat Sich Halt Effronet,” “Als Ich Bei Meinen Schafen Wacht”). If you’re tired of those trendy pop holiday albums, try The Little Drummer Boy for a tried-and-true choral Christmas experience.
