Album Review: Max Stalling – ‘Live at the Granada’ (Blind Nello)

Max_Stalling_Live at the GranadaIt has often been said that Texas’ music belongs in its own genre, and over the past couple of decades, acts like Jack Ingram and Pat Green have done their best to develop that sound. Crystal City native Max Stalling has done his part over the past dozen years as well, and one listen here proves that he is hitting his stride. This live collection runs the emotional gamut; Stalling offers up a variety of styles, ranging from the cute (”Ping Pong, Pool”) to the sensitive (the reflective “If Only The Good Die Young” and the Willie Nelson-ish “How Blue Can You Go,” which scores in spite of its spare accompaniment). However, a live album recorded in the Lone Star State should be a party, right? Stalling certainly doesn’t flounder in this area, with lively numbers like “Dime Box, Texas,” the cool “6+9 Speakers,” and the infectious “Crazy Like That,” which makes one want to pull out the chips, salsa, and beverage of your choice. Party on!
