Groove Armada Changes the Game on ‘Black Light’

“I think even people who’ve hated everything we’ve ever made before could absolutely love this record,” says Tom Findlay of UK dance-pop duo Groove Armada, and damn if he doesn’t seem to be right. Findlay and and his cohort Andy Cato have been banging out a blend of house, downtempo, big-beat, and pop for a dozen years now, but on their new album, Black Light, due out February 23rd, they turn the beat around in a bold new way.

Inspired by the spirit of the Lovebox festival they curate in London each year, which has featured everyone from The Klaxons and The Friendly Fires to LCD Soundsystem and MGMT, Findlay and Cato decided to incorporate a big, brash pop approach into the sound of their latest effort. “That sound really pushed us back towards people like Bowie, Gary Numan, New Order, Fleetwood Mac, and Roxy Music,” says Cato of his Lovebox festival experiences. Accordingly, the tunes on Black Light glow with iridescent, pure-pop melodies, propelled forward by those unmistakable Groove Armada beats. And while the duo are certainly no strangers to working with guest vocalists, they’ve outdone themselves this time around. The first single, “I Won’t Kneel” features budding British pop diva Saint Saviour, while other tracks feature the voices of everyone from Empire of the Sun’s Nick Littlemore to none other than the original Mr. Slick himself, Bryan Ferry.
