Late Night Sounds Top 5 On TV (Nov. 16-20)

Letterman

The recession still got a grip on your pockets to where Nytol isn’t in the budget?, Well, if you tuned into the fraternity of late-night hosts this week as they ran through monologues and musical guests, some of that mindless dribble might have put you to sleep while some of it might have also been the reason why you were rocking bags under your eyes like they were made by Gucci. Here are a few highlights and not-so-highlights from the week that was.

50 Cent – Jimmy Kimmel Live!,  November 18
Whenever Curtis comes to the set, comedy will ensue. Besides Kimmel pointing out his current lucky streak of having not been shot in a while, Fif also took to the stage backed by a full band to perform his broken-home anthem “Baby By Me.” Moving with his trademark Curtis charisma, the live instrumentation definitely boosted the Queens MC’s set, making the performance one of Fif’s best on late night.
Grade: B (for all the Babies by him)

Wyclef Jean feat. Cyndi Lauper – The Late Show With David Letterman, November 17
Anytime I get to see Cyndi Lauper looking like a pale-ass stunt double for Casper the Friendly Ghost plus she’s playing weird-ass instruments, I’m a happy man. I mean, who can ask for more? Doing his collabo with Lauper entitled “Slumdog Millionaire,” Wyclef stood in front of an incense-peddling musician playing a huge stringed instrument behind him on his best bohemian behavior as the Hatian Sensation went from MCing to keyboard playing with ease. Could have definitely done without Clef’s crotch grabbing around the 2:45 mark, which forced me to take a full letter grade off, but an overall decent look, all things considered.
Grade: C +

Slash Vs. Tommy Organ (Guitar Battle) – Lopez Tonight, November 16
Slash in rare form, doing what he does on the axe. Legendary. Note to anyone else thinking they can challenge the throne: Punks jump up to get beat down. Nothing more to be said.
Grade: A+

The Avett Brothers – Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, November 18
Possibly the best performance of the month, these North Carolina boys came out with massive amounts of energy when they came through Jimmy Fallon’s place to perform “Slight Figure Of Speech.” Giving the audience all that they can handle with some of the most impressive and agile moves I’ve ever seen done with the stand-up base, the rock/folk/bluegrass crew gave a spirited performance complete with an energy that not even Ritalin could fuck up. Well done boys.
Grade: A

Brian Setzer Orchestra – The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien, November 18
Is it just me or is Brian Setzer getting a little Elvis vibe to him? Decked out in a metallic silver suit that he couldn’t have possibly gotten through any metal detector, the no-longer-skinny Setzer and his loyal legion of musical minions did what they do best. Not that it wasn’t a good performance, but you know how Michael Jordan looked on the court toward the end of his career? A little slower, a little older, but still Mike? Well, that’s Brian. Good music no less, but a few more gray hairs and Ben Gay rub downs are evident.
Grade: C
