Album Review: Adam Lambert – ‘Take One’ (Rufftown)

Adam Lambert - Take OneAudacious, controversial, insanely talented and the consummate entertainer, Adam Lambert was arguably the most exciting contestant to grace the American Idol stage. Now, with the release of Take One, a collection of pre-Idol recordings (none written by Lambert), perfectly timed to coincide with his major-label debut, For Your Entertainment, Glambert devotees get a glimpse of the brilliance that was yet to come. While Lambert had an incredible versatility and ability to conquer any genre on the show, Take One focuses squarely on pop-rock songs in the vein of Daughtry, Creed, and The Fray. As always, Lambert’s vocals are pitch-perfect and soaring, especially on “December” (formerly released as “Want”), but we also get several tracks that explore his deeper register as heard on the rock strummer “Light Falls Away” and the haunting “More Than.” The softer side of Glambert comes out on the bluesy ballad “Did You Need It,” which explores the consequences of straying from a relationship and the lamenting piano ballad “Hourglass.” Essentially a collection of very polished demos, Take One, nonetheless, flirts with the Glambert we would come to love, especially on the electronic-influenced album highlight, the appropriately titled “On with the Show.” Take One perfectly whets your appetite for more Lambert music. On with the show, indeed.
