Album Review: Brett Anderson – ‘The Hunted’ (BA Songs)

Brett Anderson_The HuntedBrett Anderson has come a long way from his days as the frontman for ’90s Brit-pop heroes Suede. As the arch, urbane singer for that band, Anderson created a kind of post-Morrissey style full of cosmopolitan cool, but this single from Slow Attack, his third solo album, finds him following a much less poised/posed path. “The Hunter” moves dreamily along, with a relaxed feel that belies the tension provided by its artful orchestrations, as Anderson croons atop it all with a warmth and (Dare we say it?) maturity that might seem at odds with his former life, until you begin to remember latter-day Suede cuts like “Everything Will Flow,” from 1999’s Head Music, which pointed the way toward this more “grown-up” direction. Backed with the equally luxurious-sounding “With You, Within You,” this single suggests a future for Anderson not unlike the one former angry young man Paul Weller has carved out for himself.
