Video: Jimmy Fallon (as Neil Young) – ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ Theme

Last night, I switched on the TV just in time to see Jimmy Fallon sitting in front a microphone with an acoustic guitar, harmonica, long hair and cowboy hat. At first, I thought he’d be making fun of the obvious target: Bob Dylan and his Christmas album. But no. Fallon had something much more bizarre and entertaining on his mind. It quickly became clear that he was aping Neil Young — and covering Will Smith’s theme song for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. And you know what? It was as hilarious as it was random. Fallon’s Neil Young impression is spot on. Why couldn’t he ever be this funny on Saturday Night Live?

Of course, I totally missed the setup, so I have no idea whether there was some larger joke involved. But it almost doesn’t matter. Let’s just cherish this moment for what it is: a slice of deeply satisfying strangeness. Does this mean I’m giving into the idea that Jimmy Fallon may actually be a decent late-night host? As much as I hate to admit it… maybe so.
