Supergroup Alert: Coldplay + A-Ha + Mew = Apparatjik

Just when you thought Tinted Windows and Thom Yorke’s untitled collaboration with Flea were the randomest supergroups of 2009, think again. Meet Apparatjik. I don’t know how to pronounce it, but I do know it’s the name of a band that brings together the diverse talents of Coldplay bassist Guy Berrynam, A-Ha keyboardist Magne Furuholmen, producer Martin Terefe and Mew frontman Jonas Bjerre. Uh, how the eff did this happen?

Well, Spinner points out that the folks in Coldplay have always been vocal about their love for A-Ha: Chris Martin has called them “the first band I ever loved.” But the rest of the union remains a mystery. Also mysterious is the way Apparatjik is distributing its debut single, “Electric Eye.” They’ve already sent the track to 30 fans. Others will have to wait until next Monday, November 30, to download the song free at the band’s website. And that’s not all: Supposedly Apparatjik will also release its first album that day.

As for how the new material sounds, one of the aforementioned 30 fans did give Spinner a brief listen. Here’s their take on “Electric Eye”:

Based on a sample of the track provided by one of the 30 fans, the song meshes synthesizers with somber guitar tones. The vocalist on the track doesn’t appear to be Mew’s Bjerre, and since we haven’t been privy to the singing style of Berryman or Furuholmen, the band’s frontman is still unknown

Don’t think it’s Furuholmen, he’s released solo tracks before and doesn’t sound like his vocal…

Jonas does sing on the track, you just don’t hear him in the sample of the track. Awww and don’t forget to mention Martin Terefe! He’s part of Apparatjik as well. Who knows …. perhaps he’s singing in it too? ;)

    WTF,
This song sucks. I spent so much time trying to find it. I figured it was a lot of talent for one band. I was wrong.
