Album Review: Various Artists – ‘Alternative Christmas Holiday Anthems’ (Selector Series)
We all know that most Christmas music feels like the inside of a shopping mall on Black Friday: grating, repetitive, perhaps even torturous. And that’s why it’s necessary to return home for the holidays with plenty of our own hand-picked, festive music. As left-of-center Christmas comps go, this one is wildly eclectic, including everyone from the disgraced Gary Glitter to new wave novelties The Waitresses to the frankly out of place Ying Yang Twins. And yet, there are some notable tracks here: Iggy Pop’s slow, creepy, throaty take on “White Christmas” is the evil twin of the Bing Crosby classic. And The Vandals — who once brought us the unforgettable “Oi to the World” — bring the silliness with “My First Christmas (As a Woman),” a transsexual’s snotty, pop-punk of the “first time Christmas feels good to me.” It is undoubtedly the only holiday song ever to feature the lyric, “A doctor reconstructed my genitals.” The Raveonettes are reliably soporific and seductive. And then there’s the unlikely collaboration of Cyndi Lauper and The Hives, on the uproarious (and somehow uplifting) “A Christmas Duel.”
