The Hidden Cameras at Biltmore Cabaret, Vancouver 11/25/09

The Hidden Cameras

A sold-out show was awaiting Ontario’s The Hidden Cameras when they showed up at the Biltmore Cabaret on Wednesday night. As rain fell outside, the heat began to rise in the underground venue. A never-ending number of band members came to the stage to give us several examples of their self-described “gay church folk music.” Singer/songwriter Joel Gibb was consistent in his request for “a huge dance party” as he played “He Falls To Me,” “Death Of A Tune,” and “Music Is My Boyfriend,” while band members came and went and, at times, doubled their numbers including go-go dancers wearing blonde wigs and waving flags in the air.

Their North American tour is all for a good reason with the recent release of new album, Origin:Orphan, back in September. Tasters included “In The NA” with its choir-like chorus, and “Walk On” with death-march drums and trumpet section.

The high-energy show was a huge aid to keep everyone’s feet moving and at times, hands waving and clapping in the air. The final thing to add to this near perfect night was the Springsteen look-alike who nearly got in a fight with the lesbian couple making out at the side of the stage.
