Late Night Sounds: Top 5 On TV (Nov. 23-27)
Okay, LWMB readers. I know that you’re snacking on a mean turkey sandwich right now but since most of you aren’t at your jobs, take a second to catch up on some pretty good late-night performances. More winners in this batch than losers, peep the musical stylings of a few of your favorite bands as they entertained us insomniacs this week. Happy Cyber Monday!
Weezer – The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien, November 24
Okay, so I’m already biased. Getting the technical stuff out of the way, Weezer did “If You Were Wondering If I Want You To” off of Raditude, and it was pretty damn good. Plus, they were rocking white pants and Labor Day is long gone, which makes them even more rebel-like. Take that fashion. But I’m temped to give them an F for not wearing those damn Snuggies that they have made me fall in love with. That might have made this the best performance ever, but it wasn’t meant to be. Sigh…
Grade: B
Rihanna – The Late Show With David Letterman, November 24
After spilling her guts to Diane Sawyer, Rihanna is getting back to what she does best. Looking like someone had just hit her off with an extra generous helping of chocolate soft-serve frozen yogurt with glitter for shoulder pads, Ri Ri took her act to Letterman this week for a performance of her latest single, “Russian Roulette.” Aside from a few hair flips and microphone stand dips, the Caribbean crooner pulled off a nice “I’m-too-serious-to-do-dance moves” performance in her patented nasal vocal drawl.
Grade: B-
Mos Def and Talib Kweli – Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, November 25
The Mighty Mos Def and Talib Kweli made every Blackstar fan’s wet dream come true by once again taking the stage together to do the joint “History” off of Mos’ latest LP, The Ecstatic. With a helping hand from Amber Coffman and Haley Dekle of The Dirty Projectors, the two top notch emcees were fashionably spitting their best bars, complete with stylish newsboy hats, vests, ties and pea coat…very snazzy. Add backing by in-house noise makers The Roots, and you have a recipe for dope.
Grade: A
LMFAO – Lopez Tonight, November 26
If you were looking for your fix of key-tar playing, tight jeans-sagging rock/rappers, LMFAO is your group. Hitting up George Lopez’s stage to perform their hit “La,La,La” (love the originality in that title), the crew and their huge ass hair serenaded some randomly smoking hot girl that would have never given them the time of day if they weren’t famous. Maybe it was the flashing lights (no Kanye) that got me all excited but I confess that I was shaking my groove thang to this performance.
Grade: B (for Body-movin’)
The Pixies – Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, November 24, 2009
Rock royalty The Pixies want you to know that they are releasing a box set. And to make sure you know, they’re packaging it in a huge Flintstones-like box that gives off a real yabba-dabba-doo vibe. Performing their song “Debaser,” the band showed that they can still rock out when they have to. Older and looking more like weekend warriors than ever before, they firmly retained their title as your uncle’s favorite band with their rather tamed show.
Grade: C+
