Album Review: Los Straitjackets – ‘Yuletide Beat’ (Yep Roc)
Surfing and Christmas aren’t themes that generally go hand in hand. The ideal conditions for the former are pretty far removed from the traditional snowflakes-and-sleigh-bells scenarios commonly connected with the latter. But hey — even surfers have got to get their Yule on, so it’s only naturally that there should be a surf-rockin’ holiday album, and neo-surf stalwarts Los Straitjackets are just the guys to make one. With that in mind, Yuletide Beat offers pretty much what you’d expect to get from a Straitjackets Christmas outing; traditional holiday tunes are twanged up in a giddy guitarfest guaranteed to make you wish for a Telecaster underneath your tree this year. From “We Three Kings” to “Silent Night Rock,” Los Straitjackets bring their Dick Dale-soaked six-string surf sizzle to bear in a whole new context here. Yuletide Beat could be just the thing for that board-waxing, Ventures-loving beach bum on your Christmas list who’s always been so hard to please — until now.
