Today in Morrissey: Suicide, Desert Island Discs, Vegan Shoes

Welcome to Morrissey’s latest round of media baiting! His recent tour has not been going well: He’s been throwing rowdy fans out of his shows, and about a month ago he collapsed onstage. But that hasn’t stopped the legendarily cantankerous Smiths mastermind from doing a whole lot of talking.

Over the weekend, he appeared on the BBC program Desert Island Discs. And somehow, the conversation turned to one of Morrissey’s favorite topics: suicide. Asked by host Kirsty Young if he had thought of offing himself, the singer said, “Yes, I have. And I think this self-destruction is honorable. I always thought it was.” Apparently, he sees suicide as “an act of great control,” adding, “I understand people who do it.” Oh, and then he wanted to talk about the way he’s been screwed over by the music industry and how people see him as “a bit potty and a bit loony.” Yawn. At least his desert island song picks were solid and largely glam rock-oriented. The onetime New York Dolls superfan put his idols’ “(There’s Gonna Be A) Showdown” at #1 and also included cuts by Nico, Mott the Hoople, Iggy and the Stooges, Klaus Nomi and The Velvet Underground.

Meanwhile, Moz seems to have a different kind of life-affirming project ahead of him. The Daily Mail reports that he’s working with McCartney — Stella McCartney, that is — on a line of vegan shoes. “I’m working with Morrissey on a line of leather-free shoes which I’m really excited about,” McCartney told the paper. “We are still in the early stages but the shoes could be launched next year.”
