Vintage Video: Into a Circle – “Evergreen”

Into+a+Circle

Today is yet another cold and rainy day here in Gotham City. Since when has this town become London?  Speaking of the U.K., today’s vintage video documents cult favorite post-punk/coldwave act Into a Circle.

Primarily a duo, Into a Circle formed in the wake of the similarly styled Getting the Fear. Paired down to two members (Barry Jepson and Bee), Into a Circle had a more free-form musical approach, without a four-piece band hindering their musical experiments. All of their material was self-produced, allowing the band complete creative control over their work. Over the course of four years, they released four 12” singles and one full-length LP, 1988’s Assassins, featuring backing vocals by Rose McDowall of Strawberry Switchblade/Current 93.

Assassins is easily one of my favorite releases of the ’80s, chock full of perfect gloom-pop hooks, acoustic guitar strums, and sweet sounding vocals. Despite the band’s extremely independent approach, Into a Circle released a music video for “Evergreen,” their best known and most captivating tune.  The video was directed by Viv Albertine of The Slits and features both band members, Rose McDowall, and Bee’s dog, Scout. Click below to give it a whirl.
