Flaming Lips + Dark Side of the Moon = New Year’s Eve

flaming-lipsDid you think Phish had a monopoly on covering classic albums in honor of holidays? Well, you’re wrong. In fact, a decidedly more awesome band has announced plans to do just that. Get ready, denizens of Oklahoma City. Your hometown heroes, The Flaming Lips, will be performing Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon in full this New Year’s Eve. The boys will be gracing the Cox Center with their presence. And they won’t be alone: Stardeath and White Dwarfs, a group that includes Wayne Coyne’s nephew Dennis, will join in the festivities. Plus, Filter hears that such impressive special guests as Henry Rollins and Peaches will also take the stage.

Tickets for the show are currently onsale via Ticketmaster. And, at $10-25, they’re a total New Year’s Eve steal. In fact, those of us who live in New York — the world’s most expensive place to celebrate the holiday — may find it cheaper to hop a plane, share a hotel room and buy a Lips ticket than to actually do something enjoyable in our own city. I know I’m considering it…

I love the Flaming Lips, but Phish is a much better band. With that said, Phish has already covered Darkside of the Moon in it’s entirety in 1998 at a concert in Utah.

I’d still love to see this show though.

Really looking forward to hearing what these guys come up with, since I’m in the UK I’ll have to wait for the record. I’m liking the idea of Rollins and Peaches, should be a really interesting mix.

Covering Dark Side of the Moon, while sort of cool is a pretty cliche idea. Some band from Vermont did it like a decade ago. I heard them a time or two and while the Lips are fun, they can’t even compare with those guys. I wish I could remember the name of that damn band….

Bands that I’m aware of covering DSOTM
    Dream Theater
Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade
    Phish

Was it any of them? I’m sure more bands must have covered DSOTM.

Lolz Lolz…’more awesome’ than Phish. I’d say The Lips have a little more leg work to do with covering albums before they get the ‘decidedly more awesome nod’ you noob.

Maybe this is a nod to Pink Floyd, rather than Phish did it first and is therefore, better.

Decidely more awesome than Phish? Man, that gave me a serious laugh. Who did this deciding? The 40,000 fans coming in from across the country for Phish Festival 8? No, I guess it must have just been the Flaming Lips fans who keep paying to see the same show over and over again. Have fun on NYE with your pretend countdown at 11:30, your red laser pointers, your 2010 balloons, and your UFO. I’ll be in Miami, seeing the decidedly not as awesome band.

The flaming lips are not even close to the same musical realm as Phish. This is decidedly so! As well as the fact that the guy who wrote this article is an idiot!
    Enough said.
