Pete Doherty Sings the Nazi Anthem in Munich; Germans Not Thrilled

Friends, it’s only Tuesday, but we think it’s fair to declare an early “Epic Fail of the Week.” Remember Pete Doherty, the walking tragedy who fronted the Libertines and now helms Babyshambles? You know, the guy who wants us to call him “Peter” now that he’s putting out mediocre solo material? Yeah, that guy. Well. The Germans had to boot Doherty off the stage at last weekend’s on3 music festival in Munich. Why, you ask? Oh, no biggie; he was just singing the Nazi anthem “Deutschland, Deutschland ueber alles.”
The Daily Swarm, which also reminds us that Doherty is part Jewish, points us to the video below. Watch Doherty launch into the ridiculous song after a few minutes of bumbling through “Hit the Road, Jack”:
Of course, Doherty’s crime wasn’t fascism/racism so much as pure ignorance. And now, he’s issued an apology via a spokesperson: “He deeply apologises if he has caused any offence.” The singer’s manager, Adrian Hunter, is assuring fans that the singer “wanted to celebrate his appearance in Munich by assimilating and integrating with the crowd” and has “fought racism and fascism with numerous organisations.” Translation: Pete Doherty isn’t a Nazi. To the surprise of exactly no one, he’s just an idiot.
