Pavement: New Songs “Inevitable”?

pavementUp until now, Pavement has taken great pains to make sure fans understand that their reunion tour is a one-shot deal. Their label, Matador, even warned us that “this tour is not a prelude to additional jaunts and/or a permanent reunion.” And that was fine, man. We just wanted to see the guys play once, anyway. We knew not to expect miracles.

But hey, sometimes we get what we didn’t even ask for. In an interview with New Zealand newspaper The Age, Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg said that if the Pavement reunion goes well, it is “inevitable” that the band will write new songs. And just to prove the word wasn’t taken entirely out of context, here’s the entire quote: “If it’s enjoyable for us, I think it is inevitable that we’ll make some more music.” Kannberg also told the paper that he thought writing together again would be “fun” and empathized with his loyal listeners: “If I was a fan of the band,” he said, “I’d want to hear some new music, but we’re just going to see how it goes.”

The entire three-page article, in which Kannberg tells us it was “weird” touring with other bands, explains how the reunion came together and talks about his solo material, is worth a read. But don’t let any of it distract you from the knowledge that — OMG — we could be hearing new Pavement songs by the time the band begins its tour next year.
