Grammy Nominations 2009: Who Got Love, Who Got Snubbed?
So in case you all were doing other menial things like working, spending time with your kids or anything else meaningless like that and missed the Grammy awards nomination show, don’t worry, we got you. During the one-hour concert special hosted by Ladies Love Cool James, the stars were most definitely in attendance.
In no surprising fashion, the divas took the most nods with the do-no-wrong Beyonce snagging a whopping 10 nominations, the only artist to crack the double digits this year. Bey will be up for Album of The Year for her I Am…Sasha Fierce as well as Song of The Year for “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It).” Taylor swift followed close behind with eight and the ever ridiculous Lady Gaga managed to weasel five nominations out of the Recording Academy.
The crooners and MC’s didn’t do so bad either, with the comeback kid, Maxwell, along with Kanye West and The Black Eyed Peas all grabbing six nominations a piece. Jay-Z also showed up to represent, with five Grammy looks going to him. Oh, and for all the lovers of the lyricists, Common, Mos Def and Eminem are all up for nods as well, specifically battling it out for Rap Album of The Year.
I’m not sure what the statute of limitation is on songs for Grammy consideration, but props to Hall & Oates for getting a Best Pop Duo or Group With Vocals nod for their 1976 classic “Sara Smile” for this year’s awards.

A big snubber- Whitney Houston. Her I Look To You album’s release was intentionally moved for Grammy submission, and critics gave generally favorable reviews, and the generally good press continued through the day of announcement. The day before, the album reached Platinum status, impressive considering the highest chart position of a single on the album was No. 72. It contains a #2 Urban Adult Contemporary (Adult R&B, or basically a standard R&B album, not to be confused with “Contemporary R&B”.) She also got snubbed in the Female R&B Vocal category to dark horses Melanie Fiona and India.Arie in addition to Beyonce. It’s sad, but ageism is very much alive in the entertainment industry.

I don’t agree that ageism is a problem in entertainment. In the best rock album category, three of the five nominees come from bands that are now considered “classic rock” (the other two nominees aren’t exactly spring chickens either). U2 has gotten several grammies in their third decade in the industry, and Paul McCartney gets several with nearly every album he releases. I don’t think the problem is ageism. I think in the case of Whitney Houston, the problem is a lack of true artistic image. In her heyday, she was not a sensitive R&B artist, but a pop queen. Prestigious institutions don’t like to give awards to artists that don’t seem to take themselves seriously.

I think both of you have valid points. Michael, Whitney did have a successful album but I don’t think her album had the big splash factor that people were hoping for. No huge single like before and no big presence. And Jake, I think that sometimes popularity does come into play and most times popularity isn’t on the side of the elder statesmen. Either way, there’s always some deserving artists who just don’t make the cut, both young and old.

What’s the difference between song of the year and record of the year?

I do think that there is a bit of ageism, but not too much. Not as much as there is in radio airplay, in my opinion. Donna Summer’s 2008 release, Crayons has nothing but great radio singles on it, but radio rarely played, if ever, any of the released songs. And Donna’s voice is just as good today as it was in her Last Dance days. And it’s far better than Whitney Houston’s voice today. Whitney’s Grammy snub is just a part of life, I guess. I think a lot of people think becasue she is Whitney, she should get a nom or two. Not the case. She is Whitney, but she can be snubbed just as others have been (ie. Donna Summer). I Look To You is an okay set of songs, but Crayons by Donna Summer is far better. Of course, it is a matter of musica taste.

leona lewis – spirit AND echo got snubbed…… again!!! there has been alot of hype around her and she is an extremely talented artist. her popularity has been cemented by her performances on countless american tv programmes and her presence in the US charts e.g. Bleeding Love, Better In Time, Run and Happy e.t.c. it was a travesty that she didnt win record of the year or even song of the year for Bleeding Love!! it was the biggest single of 2008 and wasnt surpassed by any other song by any other artist… dont get me wrong Beyonce and Taylor deserve their nominations and so to does Lady Gaga, BUT if they can receive nominations i am certain Leona Lewis can too!!! she didnt even get nominated for best new artist this year!! have you seen the oother noms in that category?? none of them even compare to her….. well best of luck to her next year

Don’t forget that Madonna did not receive her first Grammy until Ray of Light- 20 years into one of the brightest and most lucrative careers in Pop music history so…..who cares about that that popularity focused, out dated politically driven statuette anyway.
Just saying.
