Michael Jackson and Sonic the Hedgehog: A Love That Dare Not Beep Its Name

There are many cheap shots to be made about Michael Jackson’s involvement with Sonic the Hedgehog 3: Children, animals, Michael Jackson, hahaha. Now that we’ve gotten that out of our system, can we talk about how totally random this is? The Guardian reports that Jacko and composer Brad Buxer “composed various themes for the 1994 Sega Mega Drive/Genesis game.”
Buxer explains that Jackson — apparently and unsurprsingly a big fan of the console game — didn’t want to take credit for his work on the soundtrack because he wasn’t satisfied with the results. “Michael called me at the time for help on this project, and that’s what I did,” the composer told French magazine Black & White. “At the time, game consoles did not allow optimal sound reproduction, and Michael found it frustrating. He did not want to be associated with a product that devalued his music.”
It seems that the “gaming community” has long been speculating over Jackson’s involvement with Sonic 3. Former Sega exec Roger Hector talked about the King of Pop’s role in the game in interviews but was forced to rescind these claims last year, when he said he had “been asked to not comment on this subject as promises of confidentiality were made.” That’s right: This is how big of an issue it was to the Michael Jackson camp. Weird, sure. But by now, nothing Jacko-related surprises me.
