Is Morrissey Having a Meltdown?

Well, is he? Let’s review the evidence: Last week, Morrissey spoke highly of suicide (something, it should be said, he’s done in the past.) In November, he flipped out and walked offstage after a “fan” who hit him in the head with plastic bottle. And two weeks before that incident, he collapsed onstage. And apparently that’s not all. On Friday, Moz cut short a Las Vegas performance after singing for less than an hour. His excuse? “Blowing out his voice.”
Morrissey went on to cancel the next day’s gig, in Indio, CA. But he did take the stage last night in Pomona, CA — hopefully with voicebox intact. But the question remains: Is the 50-year-old singer nearing a breaking point? Guys like Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney are going strong well into their 60s, yet he can’t seem to go a full month without some kind of disaster, be it physical or psychological. I love Moz like crazy, and I know he’s still got some serious songwriting chops. Regardless, it looks like he’s going to have to take it a bit easier if he wants to avoid completely burning out.

The history of Moz and touring is littered with canceled shows. Many hardened fans no longer travel to see his shows after being screwed once to often by last minute cancellations.
Is he slowing down? Sure. Should he reduce the pace of his tours? It seems prudent. Is he washed up? Hardly.

just saw him end a show abuptly at the Gibson in LA. He was about 14 songs into it, can’t remember the song that ending up being the end but it seems like it was an encore. Short but interesting; makes me want to relisten to Swords and Years of Refusal. First time I had ever heard Smiths songs performed live by him. Saw him in the Kill Unlce days where he played zero Smiths. Disappointed? A little…reminds me of a song…
