That’s Why They Call Him “The Boss”: Springsteen Speaks Out for Gay Marriage

springsteenI have to admit it: I’m not the biggest Bruce Springsteen fan in the world. I don’t dislike his music, but it doesn’t do a hell of a lot for me, either. (I know that in some circles even such a mild statement of Bruce-related apathy is considered sacrilege.) Still, I have always respected him as a stand-up guy, palling around with the great Pete Seeger and supporting various liberal causes. But today, he’s really won my heart–a heart that the New York State Senate stomped on in stilettos last week when they decided to deny gay people the right to get married.

As you may know, New Jersey is also on the brink of making a big decision about same-sex marriage. And who better to influence those debates than The Boss himself, Jersey’s ultimate rock icon? (Sorry, Bon Jovi. He just is.) In a “Brief Statement” on his website, Springsteen endorses gay marriage in his home state:

Like many of you who live in New Jersey, I’ve been following the progress of the marriage-equality legislation currently being considered in Trenton. I’ve long believed in and have always spoken out for the rights of same sex couples and fully agree with Governor Corzine when he writes that, “The marriage-equality issue should be recognized for what it truly is — a civil rights issue that must be approved to assure that every citizen is treated equally under the law.” I couldn’t agree more with that statement and urge those who support equal treatment for our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters to let their voices be heard now.

Friends, that just made me tear up a bit. Thanks to Bruce for supporting a cause that may alienate some of his fans. And here’s hoping the folks in Trenton are listening.

Amen. And I’m not sure an apology to Bon Jovi is really in order. ;)
