I think it’s fair to say that the general reaction to the news that Jessica Simpson and Billy Corgan are dating has been a resounding “WTF.” And yet, sources are running around telling tabloid media that “She has fallen hard and is smitten” and assures us that the couple are, in fact, “officially dating.” For some reason, it’s even public knowledge that Simpson and Corgan are easing into their relationship. “They are getting to know each other,” said one tipster. “He’s a nice guy.”

But here’s the question that’s been bothering me: What could Corgan, an aging alternative rock god known for his overblown musical ambitions, and Simpson, a simple, corn-fed pop princess, possibly have to say to one another? What do these two have in common? Then, over drinks this weekend, the answer dawned on me. Billy Corgan and Jessica Simpson both love Jesus. We’ve had our fair share of chuckles lately over Corgan’s religiously-oriented website, Everything from Here to There, and his Twitter account is a veritable offering to God.  In fact, the Great Pumpkin just gave an interview to MTV (video posted below) in which he claims that spirituality is “the great undiscovered part of rock and roll… Rock and roll tackled drugs and sex and gender and race relations, but here we are in 2009, and God is still a ‘Whoa! Don’t go there!’ kind of thing.”

And perhaps my speculation isn’t so unfounded. The NY Daily News, it turns out, is indeed reporting that Simpson “seems to enjoy the 42-year-old rocker’s spiritual side.”
