Brooklyn DJ Killed in Biking Accident

DJ Reverend SoulThings are not going well for bicyclists in Brooklyn these days. Just two weeks after the removal of a major bike lane in Williamsburg, and on the heels of a mass rally to protest that removal, a local DJ was struck and killed while biking to her day job in Greenpoint. Thirty-three-year-old Solange Raulston, a.k.a. DJ Reverend Soul, was sideswiped by a flatbed truck while heading west on Nassau Avenue. The British-born Raulston was making a name for herself both in the States and abroad, spinning ’60s and ’70s soul and funk. An impromptu memorial was organized by friends and fans at the Williamsburg club Bembe, where she was scheduled to DJ on the night of her death. If anything positive can come out of a loss so senseless, it’s hopefully a wake-up call to the Department of Transportation; a serious example of how much this rapidly developing area of Brooklyn needs its designated bike lanes. R.I.P. DJ Reverend Soul. Brooklyn cyclists, ride safe.
