Album Review: Deer Tick – ‘More Fuel For The Fire’ (Partisan)

Deer Tick - More Fuel For The FireNot to be confused with experimental rock band Deerhunter, Providence, RI’s Deer Tick have gained a cult following on the alt-country scene with their reverence for traditionalism and ability to weave doses of southern rock and honky tonk into the mix. Given that the band’s second album, Born on Flag Day, was released earlier this year, More Fuel For the Fire is exactly what the title implies. Recorded over a month during the same “Black Dirt Sessions” that yielded Flag Day, More Fuel includes three new songs and a live version of “Straight Into a Storm” recorded at the Visulite Theatre in Charlotte, NC. While “La La La” and “Dance of Love” showcase the band’s love of honky tonk, “Axe is Forever” is classic “bar rock”: the type of song you play over and over on a Friday night at the VFW while chugging bottles of domestic beer. While the band’s raucousness and energy need to be experienced firsthand, the live version of “Storm” fittingly captures this vibe and will force newcomers to take notice of the buoyant band.
