Happy Holla-Days: Best 5 Hip-Hop Christmas Songs Ever
So Christmas is right around the corner and for some reason, people tend to think that rappers don’t get down with the holiday spirit. Well guess what? Here’s an early stocking stuffer as this is my gift to all of you faithful LWMB readers. In need of a little cheer ? Check out the top five hip-hop Christmas songs and you can get your Christmas party started.
1. Snoop Dogg feat. Daz, Tray-D, Bad Azz and Nate Dogg) – “Santa Claus Goes Straight To The Ghetto”
Gangstas dig Christmas too. Making that evident, Snoop somehow put some hydraulics on his ’64 Chevy Impala that made it fly over the city of LA to tell this holiday tale. One of my all time faves, everybody from Snoop, Daz, Bad Azz and Tray D all spit great verses on this one that really tells the hood version of togetherness, being thankful and the meaning of the holidays.
2. Run-DMC – “Christmas In Hollis”
I know you’ve probably heard this a million times, especially if you live in New York, but this never really gets old. Before he was reality TV’s version of Cliff Huxtable, Rev Run actually used to rap and this joint right here shows him in rare form, Starter jacket, dookie rope chain and all. A must for any hip-hop Christmas list.
3. Treacherous 3 (Beat Street) – “Christmas Rap”
Any hip-hop head worth their shell toes has seen the movie Beat Street. It’s a classic and one of my favorite scenes was the Christmas Rap with a very young Kool Moe Dee and a cameo by an even younger Doug E. Fresh. This will make you Jingle Jangle with the poor all day long. The breakers and pop lockers in it are just the icing on the cake.
4. Kurtis Blow – “Christmas Rappin’”
This song is hella long, so you gotta respect Kurt for spittin’ crazy Christmas bars. Another one from way back that reminds people of a simpler, less gangsterific time in hip hop when smiling and having a good time was actually allowed. Seeing as how this was before hip hop was what it is today there’s no video, but bump this track anyway for nostalgia’s sake.
5. Rev Run & The Christmas All-Stars (Puff Daddy, Onyx, Salt N Pepa, Snoop Dogg, Keith Murray and Mase) – “Santa Baby” (Remix)
Probably the illest line-up put together to do a Christmas song, Rev Run called up a few of the homies to put it down on this one. I remember seeing this back when Friday Night Videos used to come on NBC. Remember that? Puff’s verse is absolutely wacktastic but it kinda adds to the vibe though. So bad it’s kinda dope. Ah well, grab some egg nog and enjoy !
