Late Nite Sounds: Top 5 on TV (Dec. 14-18)
Alright, so I came up with this brilliant idea, right? Since I have trouble falling asleep, and I am always up watching these late-night performances, why don’t I try to watch performers sing ballads? That’ll allow these musical guests to serve as my own personal sweet serenaders that will usher me off to dream land. Well, it didn’t exactly work, but I did get a chance to catch some of the best singing of the week. Check them out for yourself while I go back to the drawing board and think of how I can catch some damn Z’s.
Robin Thicke – The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien (December 17, 2009)
Damn, this dude is smooth. Borrowing James Bond’s stylist for his performance on The Tonight Show, Paula Patton’s husband performed “Sex Therapy,” the title track from his latest LP. A classy, sophisticated and adult performance, Thicke commanded the stage (or the floor) with his trademark Rico Suave shit. I think he thought Conan was gonna interview him after the set because he looked ready, but nah son, didn’t happen. Great set, though.

Norah Jones - Jimmy Kimmel Live! (December 17, 2009)
Remember the long-haired, flower child-looking Norah Jones from back in the day? The one that looked sweet, innocent, virginal and like she just wanted a good cup of General Foods International Coffee (Jean Luc!!!) Well, that’s not the one that showed up to Jimmy Kimmel’s set this week. Sporting a short hair cut and an even shorter skirt, Jones and her silky, persuasive voice sung her latest single, “It’s Gonna Be,” right through her fire-engine red lipstick. Looking as if the entire band was sedated with their slow movements and kinda spacey expressions, Norah put on a performance that had the whole audience in a trance. I hope she never goes selling Encyclopedias door-to-door because that voice and her new semi-bad girl look, I’d have every damn volume.
Grade: B
Chevelle – Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (December 14, 2009)
Had to break up all of the smooth grooves and soulful crooning with this one. Veteran rockers Chevelle hit up Jimmy Fallon’s spot to perform their latest single, “Letter From A Thief.” There’s nothing like that kinda angry for no reason vibe that Chevelle always comes with. Not the strongest vocal performance by any means, the band did manage to capture a couple of nice guitar solos though and a pretty energetic drum section. Not a set that would necessarily compel new fans to join the fold but an entertaining performance that probably appealed more to their already established fan base. I still sorta dug it.
Grade: C+
Alicia Keys – The Late Show with David Letterman (December 14, 2009)
(Long pause) Tight black pants……… with her saying…….. “touch me…feel me…” and rubbing herself. I think she was singing too, but I didn’t catch that part so you gotta just watch for yourself. If the strong vocals and excellent background accompaniment that I remember hearing was in fact her performance, then she definitely knocked it out of the park. Peep Letterman getting his weird, old-man pervert on with Keyes at the end of the set and creating a bit of an awkward moment for everybody.
Grade: A + (did you read the descriptio ?)
Michael McDonald – Jimmy Kimmel Live! (December 15, 2009)
With that kinda rugged, aged, most interesting man alive look, Michael McDonald stopped by Jimmy Kimmel’s to perform “White Christmas/Winter Wonderland” from his new Christmas album, This Christmas. Not much of a physical performer these days, McDonald did his thing from behind the keys and still did pretty okay. The real entertainment, though, comes from his drummer, who can be seen in a tongue-out stupor behind him. Overall, an okay performance.
