Review: Bill Cosby Presents Cosnarati – “State of Emergency” (Turtle Head)
While Bill Cosby isn’t the first person you think of when hip-hop comes to mind, America’s favorite dad is bringing people his own version of reality rap with the single “State of Emergency” b/w “Fear No Man” from the album Bill Cosby Presents Cosnarati. A narrative told in the first person of the ills of being raised in the streets and the consequences of it, including selling drugs and other elements of street life, “Fear No Man” uses a sparse and spatial track to paint pictures of inner-city living, but with a twist. As the MC realizes the error of his ways, he tries to make amends on wax and end the cycle that has caused his life to spiral out of control. Intended to be a wake-up call to those caught in similar situations, “Fear No Man” is spoken in the language of today’s generation without coming off with a corny, after-school special vibe. Not the syrupy sweet lyrics one might expect from a project overseen by Cosby, the track is gritty enough to catch the ears of listeners who may not have given it a chance if it had been given the Nick Cannon treatment. A solid effort, “Fear No Man” is a lyrical lesson for anyone willing to listen.
