Pang
Long is currently one of the most famous recording artists in Mainland
China. His first single "Two Butterflies," from the album "Two
Scalewings," was released in late 2004 and accumulated nearly 1.5
million legal ringtone downloads in China in one month (May 2005) as
well as becoming the number one most requested Karaoke songs. Born in
Northeast China, Pang Long studied guitar all throughout his teenage
years. His father wanted him to concentrate on his education so one day
he threw Pang Long's guitar into the trash. It took a little while, but
he began playing music again after his father's passing. Today, he is a
versatile musician in guitar, bass, piano and voice. Having
self-produced a one-song demo, Pang Long was signed to Beijing Birdman
Entertainment Co. (Nan He Wendou; Chang Hai) in 1999 and soon after
released his first album "Li Li." During the SARS outbreak in 2003 when
all live performances in China were halted, he devoted most of his time
to teaching voice and writing new songs. After the enormous success of
"Two Scalewings" in 2005, Birdman released his third album "You Are My
Rose" in January 2006 featuring the hit single of the same name.
Chang
Hai was born into a music family and began studying jazz drums and
dulcimer at six years old. He later received rigorous training in
guitar and piano. Starting out as a professional songwriter, he signed
with Beijing Birdman Entertainment Co. (Pang Long) in 2004 and released
his debut album Mail From the Tropical Fish. In 2005 Chang Hai was
chosen as the exclusive spokesperson for Ovation-Mainland China, the
world-famous guitar company, for his unaffected style of guitar playing.
Beijing
Boys were discovered in 2000 by Zang Tianshuo, a famous Chinese
musician and songwriter, while performing at a popular hotel in
Beijing. The five-member Chinese Pop/Rock band signed a production
contract with Zang and released their debut album Beijing Boys in May
2005. Songs on the album feature diverse music elements and cover a
wide range of topics including the environment and the 2008 Olympics.
Their presentation is powerful and unaffected, and their music is said
to be a representative of Chinese urbanite lifestyle.
Chen
Lei, current guitar player of the famous Chinese rock band Tang Dynasty
(Tang Chao), released his debut solo album Love In The Six Strings in
May 2005. His diverse songwriting skills and superb guitar playing can
be clearly heard in all ten of his original compositions. Born into a
music family, Chen Lei studied dulcimer and violin at an early age, but
was soon drawn towards Rock and Roll and guitar by the age of 12. A
versatile and talented musician, Chen Lei developed his own unique
style of playing, heavily influenced by metal rock.

boundaries. Pulling influences from Chillout / Funk & Acid Jazz/
Rock/ World & Traditional Indigenous Music to create exciting new

The ethnic
Chinese Mongolian folk music band Hanggai got its name from an old
Mongolian word referring to a beautiful pasture with mountains, trees
and brooks. Inspired by traditional Mongolian music, Hanggai plays many
Mongolian instruments including the morinkhuur (horse-head fiddle) and
the tobshuur (two-stringed plucked instrument) alongside guitar, bass
and drums. They also use the traditional Mongolian singing style of
khoomei (overtone singing in which a single person can produce two or
more vocal parts by causing sympathetic vibration through sustained
singing of low tones). Many of their songs are about beauty of the
environment, highlighting the Mongolian culture's deep love of nature.
Nature
High is one of the first electronic groups in China, pioneering work in
this brand new field that has typically been dominated by westerners.
In 2005, Nature High (originally titled Natural High) released their
self-titled debut album spotlighting high energy and uptempo, big beat
and house rhythms. The group is made up of Zhang Zhang (keys), Bei Bei
(guitar), DJ Xiao Dong, DJ Huang Tong, DJ Michael and DJ Chen Shen.
Nature High's intention is to deliver a message of health, harmony,
passion, and nature. They break the social stereotype attached to dance
music of decadence, alcohol and drugs, by promoting a vibrant, healthy,
and drug-free lifestyle. Their follow-up album, "The Spirit of Wind,"
will be released in the fall of 2006 and will include many more trance
and chill out grooves.
A Peking Opera
legend, Mei Lanfang (1894-1961) remains a household name in China. Born
into a family of Peking Opera and Kunqu performers, Mei began studying
Peking opera at the age of eight. After being told by his teacher that
he held little career promise due to his lackluster eyes, Mei practiced
his eyes persistently and managed to make them look bright, keen, and
highly expressive. A master of singing, dancing, and acting, Mei rose
to national fame before the age of 20. A highly accomplished female
impersonator, Mei performed almost all kinds of the Dan (female) roles,
ranging from Qingyi (graceful female roles) to Huadan (vivacious young
female roles). In his 50-year stage life, Mei played over 100
characters in the Peking Opera repertoire. Mei's effortless, perfectly
timed, self-assured style has come to be known as the "Mei School." Mei
was accredited as the first artist to introduce Peking Opera to an
overseas audience. Mei's exotic but exquisite performance won him great
acclamation abroad (like the US). A virtuoso of Peking Opera, Mei also
wrote many new Peking Opera plays.
