Album Review: Black Moth Super Rainbow – ‘The Autumn Kaleidoscope’ (Rad Cult)
Years before Tobacco and company emerged from their creative chrysalis as Black Moth Super Rainbow, they were known as satasnstompingcatepillars. Before that the notably smaller crew had been Allegheny White Fish (Pittsburgh slang from a condom floating down the river), but the crew had grown up since those salad days of high school. This is where The Autumn Kaleidoscope Now Has Hips finds them, re-released now with a slightly different name and under the group’s current moniker. Before the group’s discovery of the vocoder and full implication of their vintage synths but after the noisier, hip-hop inspired sounds of yore, this album finds frontman Tobacco making quiet, layered electronic music mostly centered around the acoustic guitar. Whispered, crackling vocals comingle with distant synths, and tracks like “Boatfriend” gently presuppose the distinct sound the group would achieve with later albums like Dandelion Gum and Eating Us.
