Album Review: Mojo Nixon – ‘Whiskey Rebellion’ (Mojo Nixon)

mojo nixon whiskey rebellionLongtime cult figure and musical iconoclast Mojo Nixon has spent over 20 years on the fringes of music, flirting with mainstream popularity in the ’80s with his mix of rockabilly, blues and bizarre lyrical content (See “Elvis Is Everywhere,” “Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant With My Two-Headed Love Child,” etc.). After pulling a Jay-Z and “retiring” from music earlier this decade, the singer returns with Whiskey Rebellion, a collection of 17 unreleased songs the singer allegedly had stored on cassette tapes and re-recorded. Rebellion is pure Mojo, as the singer’s raspy voice and off-the-cuff, storytelling style of narrative will please any Tom Waits fan. And with titles like “What’s Up Judge Judy’s Ass” and “Christians I Hate ‘Em,” it’s obvious that the singer hasn’t exactly mellowed with age.
