Guitar Hero Claims Its First Young Life
We used to hear a lot about Japanese teenagers dropping out of school and retreating from the outside world to devote themselves full-time to video games. Well, we can stop feeling superior, because the US of A is now home to its very own, 16-year-old Guitar Hero pro. Blake Peebles, of North Raleigh, NC, has left school to make more time for his obsession. And his parents are supporting it--they've hired home tutors for their son after enduring several months of pestering.
So what's Blake getting out of this? Corporate sponsorship? A shitload of money? A college scholarship (not likely!)?
Nope. But he did win 52 free meals at Chick-fil-A in a local tournament. Because when you're sitting on your ass playing Guitar Hero all day, a lifetime supply of fast food is exactly what you need.
Blake's dream is to earn a contract with Major League Gaming, a company that manages more than 125 top players and pays somewhere between $20-80k a year. In the meantime, though, he's staying up until 5 a.m., rocking the "shaggy hair" he was forbidden from sporting at his religious high school, and transforming his room into a gamer's paradise.
Listen, I wish this kid all the happiness and success in the world, but seriously: What are his parents thinking?
