New Album Details: The Brian Jonestown Massacre – ‘Who Killed Sgt. Pepper?’

Brian Jonestown Massacre

If it were any other band, I wouldn’t expect the presence of mind to marry an Amanda Palmer album title (Who Killed Amanda Palmer?) with a classic Beatles record, but when it comes to the Brian Jonestown Massacre, all bets are off. More importantly, Who Killed Sgt. Pepper ? has a very special secret weapon: Matt Hollywood, a long-estranged founding member who has been absent from BJM since a well-documented onstage band fight, captured in the (completely genius) 2004 documentary, DiG! Another heavy-hitter at the party is Will Carruthers of Spacemen 3, the band that spawned Spiritualized.

Now, the last few BJM albums have not measured up to the psychedelic standards of die-hard fans, relying more on trance beats than trippy creativity. Hopefully, with the return of an integral band member who helped lay down drugged-out masterpieces like Take it From the Man! and Their Satanic Majesties, Who Killed Sgt. Pepper? will restore BJM to their rightful place among the brilliant lunatics. It’s rumored that the new album will be a multicultural affair, referencing bhangra beats and Eastern European influences, but the only preview we have so far comes in the form of a YouTube video on BJM’s site, playing the new track “Let’s Go Fucking Mental.” I still hear a bit of the Club Kids, but the drugs don’t seem quite as harsh here. The Brian Jonestown Massacre will be embarking on a U.S. tour in the spring, and Who Killed Sgt. Pepper? drops February 23 on a recordings LTD.
