Sudan Gets Support From Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Police Drummers and More
Good to see that even though most of the music world’s attention has been turned to Haiti, troubled Sudan is still getting some help. Some of rock’s biggest heavy-hitters (literally) have joined together in urging world leaders to make sure full civil war doesn’t break out once more, and to help the millions of people stuck in Darfur refugee camps. Drummers all over the world teamed up with celebrity percussionists like Richard Jupp of Elbow, Caroline Corr of the Corrs, Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, Jonny Quinn of Snow Patrol, Stewart Copeland of the Police and Phil Selway of Radiohead to make this call-to-action video.
Over the next year and leading up to the 2011 referendum deciding Sudan’s fate, drummers are encouraged to take part in an even bigger group video to show solidarity for peace in the nation, part of Sudan365, a pacifist effort by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Save Darfur, FIDH, Refugees International, Darfur Consortium and Arab Coalition for Darfur. Just post a video reply to the original and tag it “Sudan365″ and “beat for peace.” The best videos will be picked and edited together into a larger feature as the referendum comes up.
Says organizer Jamie Fatto, drummer of British electronica band Faithless, “The drum is the oldest communication and music device. It’s something anyone can join in with. Anyone can add a beat to show that everybody in humanity feels that making sure horrific atrocities and millions of murders don’t kick off again in Sudan – to make sure it is a priority.” You heard the man… now get out that oatmeal tin or sweet set of bongos and see if your drumming makes the cut!
