This Weekend In Philly: Poison Arrows

Posted on August 29, 2008

poisonarrows.jpgA quick skim of concert listings quickly reveals it's pretty slim pickings in Philadelphia this weekend. An adventurous type might resort to picking bands at random, based only on their name, but then you might end up at The Plutonics record release party tonight at the Kyhber. Lucky you. Or the curious might wonder if Candlebox, who are playing Penn's Landing for free Saturday night, still suck as much as they recall. They do. And unless you bought tickets for tonight's Sonic Youth show with the Hold Steady the day Goo came out, good luck getting into that show.

For the rest of us, I offer The Poison Arrows. You could do much worse than a Sunday night at Johnny Brenda's, with a cold pint of Lion's Head (only draft in the city) and former members of Don Cabellero and Atombombpocketknife. I mean, who are you to be picky? You live in Philly. Anyway, their new EP, Casual Wave just came out this month. It follows up their last Straight Into the Drift nicely: bombastic drums keep their shoegazer tendencies pleasantly juxtaposed, and I'm a big fan of distorted-as-hell bass, no matter the context. Video after the cut.
