Patti Smith covers Nirvana

Posted on June 20, 2007

You read that title right. Patti Smith, a pioneer of the '70s New York folk movement, has covered the greatest grunge song of all time, "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Don't scoff just yet - - she does a great job with it. Rather than copying Kurt Cobain's rough and tumble style, Smith applies her emotional and withered voice to this twangy cover.

Below is the new video, which was posted exclusively on Spinner.

Dark, depressing, lonely - - Kurt would have been proud.

This version and Tori Amos's version should arm-wrestle.
