Grooverider Freed!
You may recall that last December I reported on the imprisonment of English drum 'n' bass DJ Grooverider. The story goes that the mighty, mighty 'Rider arrived in Dubai for a gig and was searched at the airport by security, who promptly arrested him after they discovered 2.16 grams of cannabis and a pornographic DVD. Although Grooverider claimed he was unaware of the contraband, the country maintains a zero-tolerance policy, and he was sentenced to four years in prison. After much speculation, the DJ was pardoned on Thursday by the Dubai Royal Family. According to the BBC, the DJ, who helmed a popular weekly show on Radio
One with Fabio, has already flown home to spend time with his family
and friends. Grooverider’s release comes during Ramadan, a holy time in
September when Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed, traditionally pardons
foreigners caught with small amounts of narcotics. Now that Grooverider is a free man, could there be a book or film in the works about his ordeal?
