Wanna Go To School With A Flaming Lip?
It seems that more and more, music and higher education are crossing paths. This time, the Academy of Contemporary Music is kicking off the spring semester with a little knowledge and know-how from the Flaming Lips’ own Steven Drozd.
With its inaugural semester taking place last fall, the Academy of Contemporary Music, the U.S. branch of the U.K.-based organization of the same name, looks to focus on “providing a solid foundation in music and the music business — with an emphasis on rock — for students aspiring to careers in the industry.” The school grants a two-year associate’s degree in music production and performance with last fall’s master class with The Who’s Roger Daltrey with an additional mini-concert by rockabilly big-wig Wanda Jackson.
Taking the helm this semester, Drozd will be be the focus of a master class taught at the University of Central Oklahoma, scheduled to start on Wednesday, February 10.
“I wish this [school] would have been around when I was a 17- or 18-year-old kid,” Drozd told NPR. The class will only be open to enrolled students at the university and will consist of an interview and audience Q&A with Drozd who will discuss musicianship as well as aspects of life as a professional musician.
I guess School Of Rock is now a reality. Word to Jack Black.
