Okay, try this on for size: “Mom, Dad, you know how we talked about me volunteering for the Peace Corps this summer? Well, instead I’ve decided to follow the Melvins on tour.” While such a statement may not go down well initially, if you wait until June 1 to deliver it you can use a convincing new piece of work to make your case — just play those skeptical parental units the Melvins’ new album, The Bride Screamed Murder, due out via Ipecac on the aforementioned date. And if you’re past the age where you need anybody’s permission to indulge in Melvins mania, you can still impress your friends by pointing out that Murder is now the third album to feature what most folks still think of as the long-lived band’s “new” lineup, with vets Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover mixing it up with Coady Willis and Jared Warren, both of Seattle stoner-metal band Big Business.

The Melvins may have just recently had their 25th band birthday, but they’re showing no signs of slowing down. They’ll be supporting The Bride Screamed Murder all over the country in June and July, sharing bills with alt-metallists ISIS and Totimoshi, including an appearance at Bonnaroo, so there are plenty of chances for you to get Melvined this summer.
