Some Artist Wants to Smoke Kurt Cobain's Ashes

Posted on October 01, 2008

cobain.jpgOh man. I don't even know where to begin with this one. Do I have to write about this really? Yes? I have to? Okay, fine.

You know how Courtney Love claimed, a few months ago, that someone stole Kurt Cobain's ashes from her home? Well. There's this Austrian artist named Natascha Stellmach, and she says she has some of Cobain's charred remains (whether they're the same remains that were taken from Love--or whether Stellmach is actually telling the truth--is unclear). In a piece called "Set Me Free," part of a series on death, Stellmach has rolled the ashes into a joint and placed it in an antique case. And if that weren't freaky enough for you, Stellmach plans to smoke the thing in an undisclosed Berlin location. This act will set Cobain free, she claims, "into the ether from the media circus."

Uh, sure, honey. That's exactly what it's gonna do.

Now, I tend to think that Stellmach made this up (or maybe the whole thing is a performance project). But if she actually did steal the ashes, she should probably be arrested... right? I mean, I'm all for artistic freedom (including the freedom to do really flaky-sounding projects and speak flakily about them to the press), but a crime is a crime. Either way, something strikes me as cheap or joke-y here. There's a whole strand of stoner comedy that revolves around smoking some dead idol's ashes. And the idea that Cobain is in some sort of media-controlled limbo is pretty yawnworthy, too. All around, a fairly uninspired stunt, if you ask me.
