Video: Lou Reed - "Caroline Says, Pt. II" (from Berlin: Live at St. Ann's Warehouse)
We told you about director Julian Schnabel's forthcoming film featuring Lou Reed's 1973 album Berlin a little while ago, and it seems we're finally getting a visual taste of what's to come. Matador Records is releasing a 14-track soundtrack that resulted from the first-ever staging of Berlin in Brooklyn at St. Ann's Warehouse in 2006, and the video gathers elements from the film. Reed is visibly upset as he sings, giving this tune even more emotional weight, if possible. Berlin recounts the downward spiral of a young woman hell-bent on destroying herself against the unforgiving backdrop of post-war Berlin, which undoubtedly continues to hit home for its creator. Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons joins him for the ending chorus, resulting in a truly beautiful rendition of a track from Reed's most critically maligned album. New life is breathed into Berlin with the release of the live DVD on October 14, and you can pick up Berlin: Live at St. Ann's Warehouse as of yesterday.
